US Citizenship Test

Last updated: October 20, 2026

This policy explains how the US Citizenship Test iOS app (the "app"), published by Macwan Apps, an indie studio operated by Jobin Macwan, handles your data. The app is a study tool for the U.S. naturalization civics and English tests. It is built to collect as little as possible and to keep your study data on your device.

This page covers the app specifically. Our studio-wide privacy policy gives the shorter overview across all Macwan Apps products.

The short version

What stays on your device

Everything about your studying lives locally on your iPhone or iPad:

This information is stored on the device using Apple's standard on-device storage (SwiftData and app preferences). There is no iCloud sync and no server copy. If you delete the app, this data is removed with it.

Anonymous usage analytics

To understand which parts of the app help people prepare, and to fix what trips them up, the app records anonymous usage analytics using PostHog. It is anonymous by design: there is no account to tie it to, and the identifier is a random ID created on your device.

What is recorded:

What is never recorded: your name or contact details, which answer you chose on individual questions, anything you type (for a search, only its length is recorded), your device's advertising identifier, or your location. Analytics are used only to improve the app, never for advertising, and never sold or shared for marketing.

Purchases

The app offers a one-time lifetime purchase and an auto-renewing weekly subscription. Payments are processed entirely by Apple through your App Store account. We never see or receive your card or payment details.

To unlock what you've bought across your devices and after reinstalling, purchase status is managed through RevenueCat, which acts as our purchase-processing service. It uses an anonymous purchase identifier and the receipt Apple provides; it is not linked to your name or an account, because the app has none.

Content updates

The full study content ships inside the app and works completely offline. From time to time the app checks macwanapps.com for updated content (for example, when an official's name or a fact changes) and downloads it if newer. This is a plain download: the app sends no personal information in the request. As with any web request, our host can see the standard technical details of the connection (such as your IP address and the app's user agent); we do not use these to build a profile of you. If the check fails or you're offline, the app simply keeps using its built-in content.

Notifications

If you enable study reminders, they are scheduled and delivered entirely on your device using Apple's local notifications. There are no push notifications, so we do not collect a device push token and no reminder information leaves your device.

Listening to sentences

In the English test, the "Hear it" button reads a sentence aloud using Apple's built-in speech voice on your device. No audio is recorded, and nothing you say is captured.

Children's privacy

The app is intended for a general audience preparing for the citizenship test. It is not directed at children, and it does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone; there is no account and no personal data to collect.

Your rights

Because your study data lives on your device, you are in control of it: deleting the app deletes the data, along with its random analytics identifier. If you have questions, want to exercise a data right, or have any concern, email us and we'll respond promptly.

Changes to this policy

If we change how the app handles data, we'll update this page and the "last updated" date above.
