Get ready for New Zealand's new citizenship test
From late 2027, most people applying for New Zealand citizenship by grant will need to pass a test. We're building a study app for it, and it will launch once the official study material is published.
What's been announced so far
Source: New Zealand Government, govt.nz (updated October 7, 2026).
The topics, as announced
Expected topics
The Bill of Rights Act and human rights, voting rights and democratic principles, New Zealand's system of government, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, some criminal offences, and travelling overseas on a New Zealand passport.
Not published yet
The official study material, the exact start date, test locations and the fee per attempt. The Department of Internal Affairs says it will provide study material before the test becomes a requirement. We'll build every question against it, so the app launches after it does. Nobody can sell you an accurate practice test for New Zealand before then.
What the app will include
Questions checked against the official material
Original practice questions written from the government's study material once it's published, each with an explanation and the section it comes from.
Mock tests in the real format
Timed mock tests that match the official format: currently announced as 20 multiple-choice questions with 15 needed to pass.
Short, clear lessons
Every topic explained in plain English, from the Bill of Rights Act to how Parliament works and what Te Tiriti o Waitangi means today.
Know when you're ready
A readiness score built from your accuracy, coverage and mock results, and a daily pace set by your test date.
Private by design
No account and no sign-in. Your progress stays on your iPhone, like our other citizenship apps.
Works offline
Every question and lesson built in, so you can study anywhere, with or without a signal.
Launching when the test does
We'll release the app once the official study material is published, ahead of the test's start in late 2027. Want a note when it's out? Email us. An independent study tool, not affiliated with the New Zealand Government or the Department of Internal Affairs.
