NZ Citizenship Test: what's known about New Zealand's new citizenship test, and about our app. Can't find your question? Email us; a real human (the developer) reads every message. New to the test? Start with our test guide.
When does New Zealand's citizenship test start?
From late 2027, for most people applying for citizenship by grant. The exact date hasn't been set yet. The latest official information is on govt.nz.
Will I have to sit the test?
Most people applying for citizenship by grant will. If you've already applied, or you apply before the test becomes a requirement, you won't need to sit it. Applicants under 16 or aged 65 and over are exempt, along with some others, such as people with an English-language waiver; see govt.nz for the full list.
What will the test be like?
As announced: 20 multiple-choice questions in English, with at least 15 correct (75%) needed to pass, taken in person. The expected topics are the Bill of Rights Act and human rights, voting rights and democratic principles, New Zealand's system of government, Te Tiriti o Waitangi, some criminal offences, and travelling overseas on a New Zealand passport.
Where will I sit it, and what if I don't pass?
The test will be taken in person and administered by Aspeq Limited, with locations planned throughout New Zealand. If you don't pass you can rebook; after three attempts you wait at least 30 working days before up to three more. A fee per attempt is likely, but the amount hasn't been decided.
Is there an official study guide yet?
Not yet. The Department of Internal Affairs says it will provide study material before the test becomes a requirement.
When will the app be available?
After the official study material is published, so that every question can be checked against it, and ahead of the test's start in late 2027. We'd rather launch later than sell you practice questions built on guesses.
How will I know when it launches?
Email support@macwanapps.com and we'll let you know. We'll only use your address to tell you about the launch.
Will it be free?
We plan to make it free to start, with full access as an in-app purchase, like our other citizenship test apps. No ads.
Is this an official government app?
No. It's an independent study tool made by Macwan Apps, and it isn't affiliated with or endorsed by the New Zealand Government, the Department of Internal Affairs or the test administrator.
